WELLESLEY — The Wellesley Advisory Committee heard presentations on four Special Town Meeting articles, with extended debate over competing approaches to school air conditioning funding. Planning Director Rob Watchilla requested $350,000 for a 2027-2028 Comprehensive Plan and a $15,570 planning salary transfer. School Committee Chair Niki Ofenloch presented Article 14, which includes $1.4 million in design funding and an optional $242,000 premium for accelerated design of Bates and Fiske schools by summer 2027.
A citizen petition (Article 15) proposed immediate construction funding for those two schools from Free Cash reserves; petitioner Kelly Norris characterized it as addressing an equity issue affecting more than 1,700 students. Committee members urged the School Committee and petitioners to coordinate before Town Meeting, with several expressing concern about debt exclusion risk for Schofield and the Middle School if left on a different funding track.
