Select Board increases Municipal Lien Certificate fees with tiered structure

Wellesley Select Board approves fee increase for demand bills and Municipal Lien Certificates. The Board voted unanimously to raise demand fees from $5 to $10 per bill, expected to generate approximately $35,000 in additional annual revenue, and to maintain the standard Municipal Lien Certificate fee at $25 while establishing a $50 fee for rush requests requiring issuance within 24 hours. Treasurer and Collector Maura O'Connor said the increases reflect staff time and workload; the town issues roughly 557 to 587 MLCs and 4,370 demand bills annually.
Board members rejected a proposal to raise all MLCs to $50, citing concerns that a blanket increase would burden residents at closing and noting the town's reserves already exceed target levels. The new fees took effect May 18, 2026.
