Wellesley Light Board OKs HR Guidebook, Power Proclamation
Municipal Light Board · Meeting of September 30, 2026
Wellesley's light board signals its first rate increase in years after a $2.2 million reserve draw. Director David G. Wood told the Municipal Light Board that oil-fired generation at the jointly owned Watson plant in Braintree ran far above budget this winter amid tight regional capacity, forcing the department to pull $2.2 million from its power-supply reserve rather than immediately raise bills.
"I would think so, once we look at it," Wood said when asked if a rate increase is likely, though he estimated any adjustment tied to this shortfall alone would be a quarter-cent or less per kilowatt-hour. Energy New England chief executive John told the board the cooperative procures 5.7 million megawatt-hours a year for 27 municipal utilities and that Wellesley's supply is now about 86 percent non-carbon-emitting. The board also voted unanimously to adopt an updated HR Guidebook and a Public Power Week proclamation.
