Bylaw Review Committee · Meeting of August 24, 2026
Wellesley's Bylaw Review Committee approved its final charge in a 5-0 vote and opted for a narrow fall warrant article over a full bylaw rewrite. Chair Kenneth Largess III reported the Select Board signed off on the amended charge August 17, and the panel then polled 5-0 to ratify it, with Michael D'Ortenzio Jr. absent for the vote. Members debated moving fast versus a slower, holistic review, ultimately agreeing to bring only a consolidated article covering open meeting law, executive session and minutes to the Fall 2026 Special Town Meeting.
Secretary Marjorie Freiman warned that anything more substantive "doesn't reflect well on the committee" if it later needs unwinding. Town counsel member Michael D'Ortenzio Jr. said statewide practice is shifting toward citing state law rather than restating it, citing Attorney General guidance that "the law doesn't capture." A fuller model bylaw template is now targeted for the Spring 2027 Annual Town Meeting.
