Wellesley Board of Health hears mental health agency report, opens kratom regulatory inquiry. The board received its annual update from Human Relations Services Executive Director Lindsay, who reported 3,205 sessions delivered to 162 Wellesley residents in the past year and described the agency as financially stabilized after losing roughly 25 percent of clinical staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. Chair Marcia Testa Simonson, MPH, PhD, and Vice Chair Linda Oliver Grape, PA-C, MPH, pressed Lindsay on the agency's response to two spring community tragedies, including the deaths of two elementary school children, and on whether HRS would have its radar up for high school students when school reconvenes September 2.
Health Director Lenny reported that staff will inventory kratom products on Wellesley store shelves and review other communities' regulations before bringing draft restrictions to a future meeting; board member Susie Eklund argued the substance "is more opioid than tobacco" and suggested a sale ban. The board also confirmed a COVID case count of just four for July 2026, down from 31 in July 2024, and voted unanimously to approve minutes before shifting its regular meeting day from Thursdays to Tuesdays at Eklund's request.
